PRACTICE


1964-69           
Participated in performances (events/happenings) in UK and Europe. (Joseph Beuys, Fluxus, Yoko Ono, John Latham and others.)

1966-67           
Initiated APG in collaboration with John Latham, joined by artists including Jeffrey Shaw, Barry Flanagan, Stuart Brisley, David Hall and Anna Ridley.

1966-89           
Coordinator of the APG. Devised and participated in exhibitions and podium discussions across the UK and Europe.

1968-73           
Negotiated and effected Industrial Placements with: British Steel, British Rail, British Airways, Esso Petroleum, ICI Fibres, Ocean Fleets, Hille International.

1972-73           
Negotiated Whitehall Treaty: UK Central Government persuaded of bilateral interest. The Civil Service Memorandum of 1973 related for the first time, Artist activity into Government activity.

1973-85           
Negotiation and implementation of practice in government department placements with: the Department of Environment, the Scottish Office, Peterlee Development Corporation, the Department of Health. 

1977                
Negotiated with Nicholas Tresilian new artist role into EEC policy, Artist as cultural worker.

1985               
Established pilot European Placement Programme, funded by EEC Cultural Sector. First European placement (Economics Ministry, NRW, Germany).

1989                
Established Organisation and Imagination (O+I) as independent international artist network, consultancy and research organisation.

1989-91           
Negotiated/led Educational Research Project, Inner London Education Authority and the London Borough of Southwark.

1990                
Established Interventionist Placement Course, Chelsea College of Art. Paper presented at Inaugural conference of ELIA (European League of Institutes of Art and Design), Amsterdam.

1990                
Established European Network for Repositioning Art in Decision-Making Processes of Society with Institutes of A&D in Europe.

1991                
Speaker at Scandinavian Management Symposium, Bergen, Norway, establishing Norwegian participation in O+I European Network and Erasmus.

1992                
Academic coordinator of Erasmus programme, ART IN CONTEXT, at the London Institute, Chelsea, in collaboration with colleges in Norway, Spain and Holland.

1993                
Promoted new artist role (performance) in St Petersburg, by invitation of the Artist Union.

1994-09           
Director of O+I, coordinating O+I programme and negotiations between artists and key UK/EU public and private sector organisations, in response to current interest in relevance of newly defined artist role.

1996                
Curated at ICA London first event in series The New Role of Art in the 21st Century.

1998-00        
Consultant to Tate Gallery re transference of APG archives, working with Goldsmith’s MA.

1999-02         
Working to establish a collaborative programme with key UK/EU private and public sector organisations and International cultural organisations, to raise profile of artist role in decision-making as appropriate to C21. Representing the APG ‘lost history’ and current practice to today’s generation of interested artists and cultural policy organisations (via illustrated lectures and performance). Working to establish an academic base for art theory and practice in this new role, (London Institute and Goldsmiths). Observing/monitoring John Latham ‘s specific art/science mid C20 ‘discovery’ relative to theoretical physics  (Cambridge, Imperial College).
